About

Rosalynn Shropshire-West is a life resident of Indianapolis and a deeply accomplished historian, educator, author, and community leader. A graduate of Crispus Attucks High School, she holds a B.A. in United States History from Indiana University–Indianapolis (with distinction), and an Honorary Doctorate from Global Evangelical Christian College & Seminary. She was inducted into Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Sorority and Golden Key International Honor Society, and received the IUPUI History Department Achievement Award.

Roz has been married to Henry West for 53 years; they have four adult children and ten grandchildren. She is a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, serving as Christian Education Director, Adult Sunday School Teacher, and Dean of the Dunamis Christian Education Conference.

Author

For seven years, Roz authored Black History Essays that appeared weekly in the church bulletin — essays that became the foundation of her book Black Vignettes: Essays in African American History & Culture (January 2010). In 2023, she co-authored Playing the Numbers: Musing with Pastor, a compilation of 15 years of pastoral anniversary tributes. She also contributed Black history writing to POWER Magazine International under the byline "Soul Food."

Community Leadership

National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) — Life member; former President, Indianapolis Section. Entered community partnerships on behalf of NCNW to effect positive change across Indianapolis.

Community Action of Greater Indianapolis (CAGI) — Board member for 10 years; Board Chairperson for 4 years.

ASALH — Charter member, IUPUI–Joseph Taylor Branch of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (founded 1915 by historian Carter G. Woodson).

Other Service: Board of Directors, "Not To Believers Like Us" (N2BLU) — domestic violence advocacy; Treasurer, Martindale-Brightwood Health Net Board; volunteer tutor, Indy Reads adult literacy program; religious studies instructor, Union District Certificate of Progress Program.
